Inspirational Stories # 36 – Shake It Off and Step Up

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a deep well.

The donkey brays for help for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.  Finally, the farmer, feeling the situation is hopeless, decides the best thing to do is bury the donkey to end its suffering.

So, he begins shoveling dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and brayed horribly. Eventually he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw.

With every shovel of dirt that falls on his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up—on top of it.

With every shovel of dirt, the donkey kept shaking it off and stepping up. Slowly, the donkey rised higher and higher, until finally, it steped out of the well, victorious and unharmed.

Moral of the Story

Resilience isn’t just about surviving hard times; it is about using those exact hardships to elevate yourself. The setbacks, criticisms, and failures that feel like they are going to bury you can actually become the very foundation you use to climb higher, provided you refuse to give up.

Invajy Insight

In our daily lives, “dirt” comes in many forms. It is the sudden, heavy financial expense you weren’t prepared for. It is the harsh, unfair criticism from a relative or a manager that makes you feel incompetent. It is the sting of a rejection letter after an interview you spent weeks preparing for, or the sudden end of a relationship you thought would last forever.

When these things happen, the natural human reaction is to feel overwhelmed—to sit at the bottom of the well, cry out in frustration, and let the weight of the situation bury your spirit.

But what if you shifted your perspective? Instead of letting a painful experience crush you, use it as a stepping stone. A harsh piece of criticism is just “dirt”—shake it off your ego and use the underlying feedback to step up and improve. A failed goal, like falling off a new fitness routine or a budget, is just “dirt”—shake off the guilt and use the lesson to build a smarter strategy for tomorrow.

Every time you choose not to be a victim of your circumstances, you rise a little higher.

The great  philosopher Confucius said—“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

Learn from failures. Retain focus on your aims/goals. Life is always with ups and downs. Do not get demotivated by the vagaries of life.

Ask yourself today: What “dirt” is currently falling on your shoulders? Are you letting the anxiety and frustration bury you, or are you going to use this experience to elevate your footing?

The next time life tries to dump its worst on you, don’t panic. Just shake it off, and take a step up.
