Self-discipline is an inherent ability of self-control on your behavior, thoughts, actions and emotions. It’s about making yourself work hard or behave in a particular way; regardless of how you’re feeling, physically or emotionally. You deliberately choose to pursue something better for yourself in spite of distractions, obstacles and unfavorable odd situations in your life.

Few people get confused among self-discipline, self-motivation and willpower. Actually, self-discipline is different from self-motivation or willpower. Motivation and willpower contribute to it, as do persistence, the ability to follow through on your intentions, and hard work.

Having goals is crucial in life. If you do not know where you are moving ahead, it’s easy to lose your way or get sidetracked. You will keep getting distracted with different directions and will get exhausted at some point of time.  SMART goals give you a direction, a plan and a time frame, which ensures your approach to become disciplined in order to achieve them.

Not only goal-setting give required focus; long term goals having higher impact help you to resist immediate wants or instant gratification. Marshmallow Test has proven it scientifically. It all makes you a more disciplined person.


I am a core advocator of Mindfulness. It has made immense impact in my life and transformed me altogether. You read any of my self help article, mindfulness has find it’s place in those as one of strategies with logical and scientific reasoning. Mindfulness empowers you to observe your thoughts. It makes you aware about your behavior, actions and emotions. We can only change what we are aware of. The moment you are able to notice them, your self-control steering will turn them in the right direction.

Be Comfortable with Discomforts

One of the biggest reason we do not have self-discipline our life is because we try to escape from the uncomfortable, boring, unknown or tough things. We would rather love to do the effortless, comfortable, entertaining and familiar things. Make yourself comfortable with all these discomfort things.

Willpower is basically a sudden and momentary burst of focused energy. It is one of the greatest human strength. Every time you need to do an undesirable job or show a behavior against your will, you like to call on this willpower. Willpower contributes a lot in building self-discipline.

Just recall, how you changed your behavior through absolute willpower, at some point of time in your life.

I know, you would be thinking that it did not happen always. There have been occasions; when you also failed miserably; in spite of using your willpower. Well, don’t feel bad! This is what happens with most of us. It has happened with me also.

Actually, willpower works like a muscle; the more you train it, the more it gets strengthen. The more chances to change your behavior and habits, and in turn being more a self-disciplined person.

Ongoing practice

Self-discipline is one of those things that require ongoing practice and nurturing. Nobody is born with self-discipline; it’s a learned behavior and a life skill. It can be developed and strengthened but the regularity is vital. Just like any other skill you want to master, it requires daily practice and ongoing repetition.

Be disciplined in every area of your life. If you fail; start over and over again. You may find, the first week committing to a new balanced diet, or a new exercises regimen, or a new morning routine, things go in great manner. Motivate yourself and start it again. In due course of you will make it a habit and imbibe it in your lifestyle.
