Self-awareness

Within the literature self-awareness has been conceptualized as possessing both state like and trait like qualities. While, at one hand self-awareness is an experience of “becoming the object of one’s own attention”, which reflects a state like experience; it is also an individual’s capacity to identify, process and store self-related information, which is more of a persistent trait like characteristic.

Self-awareness allows you to make informed decisions, set realistic goals, and improve their relationships with others. Without it, you won’t notice your behaviors/emotions or learn from your failures and adjust your habits. People who possess self-awareness tend to be more empathetic, emotionally intelligent, and adaptable, as they can recognize and regulate their emotions effectively.

So how do you cultivate self-awareness? It’s all about questioning your thoughts, emotions and feelings, and doing self-introspection. Meditate, imbibe mindfulness in daily activities, write journal, hire a therapist, or even ask a trusted friend or family member to point out your not-so-stellar qualities. You can also use a psychological model called Johari Window.  It is one of the most effective tools for developing self-awareness. Need a little more guidance on Johari Window? Patience

In my opinion, this is probably one of the most difficult personal trait on this list to develop. With advanced technology, attention spans are shrinking, and instant gratification is the new norm for most people nowadays. Everyone wants to become successful overnight. But, the reality is that very little in life happens overnight. When we look towards successful people, and what appears to us an “overnight success”, is actually  years or even decades of patience, hard work, and dedication behind it.

Patience is key

Patience is a virtue, and it’s more important than ever. You need to cultivate patience and focus on the long-term rewards; to achieve true success and happiness in your life. Only through patience will you gain the clarity required to overcome the problems that you face in life. After all, the tortoise still wins the race, and the impatient hare is left wondering where it all went wrong.

Integrity

The bedrock of trust and respect in any relationship, integrity is the quality of staying true to one’s values, principles, and ethical standards, even in challenging situations. Additionally, having integrity, you can make difficult decisions with confidence, guided by a moral compass that aligns with your core beliefs.

If you don’t have your integrity, living an honest, successful life may be difficult. Practice this attribute daily in day to day activities. The best way to cultivate integrity in your life is by being honest, open, and transparent in everything that you do. Through showcasing values, principles, and ethical standards in your every action, you define your true character, and that character defines who you are and who you eventually develop into.
