Affirmations Definition
Affirmations help to purify your thoughts and restructure the dynamic of your brains; so that you truly begin to think nothing is impossible. The word affirmation comes from the Latin affirmare, originally meaning “to make steady, strengthen.”
In simple words, affirmations are positive statements or phrases that reflect a desired outcome. These are aimed to affect your conscious and the subconscious mind, so that in turn, they affect your behavior, thinking patterns, habits and environment. Affirmations help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts, and replace them with more positive and empowering beliefs.
The basic idea is that by repeating these affirmations consistently, you can rewire your thought patterns and beliefs, leading to more positive attitudes and actions.
How do Affirmations / Positive Statements Work?
Let us understand, how does this mechanism works. The words which compose the affirmation, automatically and involuntarily, bring up related mental images into your conscious mind, which motivate, energize and inspire you. The affirmations, and the consequential mental images, get engraved on your subconscious mind. Which in turn, changes the behavior, actions, habits and responses according to the repeated words.
Positive Affirmations are positive statements declaring specific goals in their completed states. Ideally, affirmations should be repeated in a quiet space with concentration. This repetition allows one to change habit patterns and attitudes over which one normally has little control.

How to Make Affirmations Work for You?
In this article, we’ll explore how you can use affirmations to drive positive change in your life in general. Here are the steps to make Affirmations powerful enough to work for you
Daily Affirmations
Begin with daily affirmations, which are simply statements that describe a goal in its already completed state. You do repetitive physical exercises to improve your physical health; likewise daily affirmations are mental exercises for your mind and perception. When you repeat affirmation statements daily and believe in them, you will start observing positive changes.
You may also place sticky notes with affirmations on your mirror, computer, or any place you frequently look at. This constant visual reminder can reinforce the positive statements in your mind.

Visualization Combined with Affirmations
Affirmations work extremely well alongside Visualization. Combining affirmations and visualization is a great way to speed up your manifestations. It increases the effects manifolds. So, instead of just writing it down or saying it aloud, you should also visualize the changes you’d like to see. Visual images not only make you feel the changes and motivate you, it also make you mentally ready for the challenges to be overcome in the process of achieving goals of your affirmation statements.
Learning
All of you have attended the English grammar classes during primary schools. Go back and refresh your memory about learning from the module – sentence building and classification of sentences. There you were taught, the difference among affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences. Stop using negative sentences in verbal as well as written affirmations. Whenever, a negative statement or thought conceives in your mind, consciously covert it in to positive affirmations.
Change the focus of affirmations from negative to positive, like “I no longer suffer from migraines.” To make it a powerful affirmation, you would have to say, “I live a pain-free life.”
Another example “I am not addicted to drugs”, to make it more powerful, you would have to say, “I take care of my body and I am free from drugs”
Include Emotions
Powerful affirmations include content, positivism and emotion. Content only describes the specific outcome that you wish for. Positivism ensures elimination of negative vibrations. Emotion gets to the heart of how you feel about that specific outcome. You need to engage your emotions also along with mind. For a more powerful affirmation, use all the three elements. Choose the right emotion for what you’re trying to attract, and place it exactly on the correct part of your affirmation.
“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” ~ Maya Angelou
Lets us consider again the affirmation we used as example in last step:
“I am not addicted to drugs”
To make it more powerful, we converted that from negative statement to positive statement
“I take care of my body and I am free from drugs”
Now to make it even more powerful by adding an emotion to it, you would have to say,
“I feel physically and mentally healthy as I am free from drugs”
The content of the example statement was clear. Yet it lacked the positivity and an emotional charge. Breathe a life into such affirmation by adding positivity and an active expression of feeling as shown above.
You will know that you have a powerful affirmation when you feel a surge of emotional energy. The force of feeling will generate the escape velocity and jump-starts you into action.
Be Positive and Present
Apart from frame your affirmations in positive language, it’s also important to state your affirmations in the present tense, as if they are already true. For example, say “I am confident and capable” instead of “I will be confident and capable.”
